Sunday Worship 10am

Leadership at Joy

Colossians 1:18 teaches that Jesus Christ is the head of the Church. Therefore, we believe that He is the "senior pastor," or, Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4), of the flock at Joy. But Jesus has entrusted the oversight and care of the flock to a team of qualified elders. Throughout the New Testament, the pattern for leadership in the church is consistently a plurality of elders giving themselves to the care, teaching and oversight of the local congregation (for example, see Acts 14:23, Titus 1:5). The Apostle Paul describes the qualifications for elders in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:9.

Our conviction is that the terms "elder" and "pastor" are interchangeable in the Scriptures, and therefore it is the responsibility and privilege of all the elders together to "shepherd the flock of God that is among you" (1 Peter 5:2). While all elders have equal authority and responsibility and must meet all the qualifications outlined in Scripture, some elders are uniquely gifted to devote themselves especially to the ministry of the Word of God, and are often financially compensated for their labors (1 Timothy 5:17-18).

For more on our understanding of eldership in the local church, see Alexander Strauch, Biblical Eldership, and the four-part online seminar by the same title delivered by John Piper: http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/seminars/biblical-eldership-part-1a
